Women's Refuge Sculpture of Strength

NZ Sculpture OnShore is proud to introduce the inaugural Women’s Refuge NZ Sculpture of Strength, a powerful new recognition honouring artists who amplify the kaupapa of safe homes, strong communities, and collective healing.

This year’s recipient, Whakaruruhau by Taranaki artist Daniel McKerrow, is a breathtaking 3m-high wahine cloaked in a flowing copper kākahu. Her presence anchors the exhibition’s social purpose — a visual embodiment of resilience, protection, and the strength found in unity.

Unlike traditional art prizes, this award is not based on competitive judging. Instead, it recognises an artist whose submission most strongly aligned with the values and mission of Women’s Refuge. It’s a cause-aligned honour — a strategic investment in advocacy, not just artistic merit.

Visitors are invited to stand in solidarity by taking selfies alongside Whakaruruhau and sharing on social media, helping raise awareness and spark conversation around the realities faced by women and families affected by violence.

This award is more than symbolic. It’s a partnership between art and purpose — a way to elevate voices that speak to the heart of our community’s challenges and hopes. By recognising artists who champion the cause, Women’s Refuge strengthens its mission while inspiring others to engage, support, and act.

We celebrate strength We honour advocacy. Make art a catalyst for change.
