Collection: Studio Reset

Kapiti artist Studio Reset is known for her multi-sensory, encaustic artworks and has been exhibiting and selling those artworks nationally and internationally for over 15 years. A few years ago, she began thinking how she could push the boundaries of her beeswax medium and take it into the third dimension. A passionate beekeeper, Studio Reset began collaborating with the 50,000 honey bees living in hives on her property.

Hexagons enable bees to make efficient use of space whilst using as little wax as possible. The shape holds the maximum amount of honey, whilst ensuring no space is wasted, because hexagons fit tight, side by side, in a compact fashion.

With this in mind, this is where her experiments began, with the idea of using the bees to help create the sculpture on a form she fashioned out of wire. After a few failed attempts, she began to consider things like bee space, seasons, hygienic behaviours and embarked on further experiments to achieve success in method.
