Rex O'Brien

Born and raised in Mount Maunganui, Rex began working in stone about 20 years ago after an interest in art from childhood. Working mainly in hard stone Rex enjoys creating works that explore the human condition through to abstract creations based around organic form.    

Studying for a diploma in art in 2009-10, Rex became a semi-professional artist and an active participant in the Sculpture Symposium circuit throughout NZ. As well as participating, Rex and partner Raewyn organised and supervised the Tauranga Sculpture Symposium in 2012 and 2014.  

Rex gained success in 2016 winning the Whangārei Sculpture Symposium with his piece 'Kaitiaki Manu', and has twice being a finalist in the Rotorua Museum art award.
