Sofia Athineou

Sofia, a celebrated contemporary glass artist of Greek heritage, is renowned for her dynamic sculptures that beautifully capture the essence of the natural world. Sofia’s work is distinguished by its sensual and optical qualities, as she expertly manipulates glass to reflect, distort, and transform light, inviting viewers to see the world through a dynamic, ever-changing lens. Her ability to play with perception has garnered her widespread acclaim, including many prestigious awards.  

Her art is prominently featured in major gallery and museum shops across New Zealand. While her pieces are cherished in private collections, Sofia is set to make her mark with her first major public commission for the Maungawhau Train Station, scheduled to open in the near future. This project symbolises the 53 volcanoes of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and seamlessly blends cultural narratives with architectural design. She is currently working on a large-scale commission for an historic townhouse in Manchester, England.
