Donald Cope

What inspires your art practice?
My work explores the movement and shape and rich colour that copper can give when heated and beaten into the human form in a semi realistic way. This figure’s exaggeration is unrealistic when one moves around it.

What materials do you work in?
Copper, hand beaten, brazed into shape.

Describe your artwork for NZ Sculpture OnShore 2021
My inspiration explores the relationship with the human form from concept sketch to a maquette then a full-size drawing to work from. I like to create work that gives pleasure to others and inspire creative thoughts that stay with you.

Where are the public most likely to see your artworks outside of NZSOS?
At home in my studio.

Where did you study?
Art school UK. Self taught working with copper.
