Darryl Fagence

What inspires your art practice?
If I can make a piece of art that will give joy or a sense of contentment to the viewer, then I have succeeded. If in a small way it is relatable to past, present or future, then it is relative.

What materials do you work in?
Stainless steel, glass, copper, wood

Describe your artwork for NZ Sculpture OnShore 2021
Life is a mirror was designed to be a playful piece, a piece that will give another dimension and interaction with the surroundings. Sometimes when we look forward, maybe we need to see an alternative view. This artwork will give the viewer a sense of a different world, the many facets of human existence. Utopia came from imagining a future dimension, a coloured, dynamic and purposeful place that could be. This piece needed a sense of strength and direction, yet be calming and nurturing, just one of these elements is enough to fulfill the utopia that is within us all.

Where are the public most likely to see your artworks outside of NZSOS?
FAGENCE ART - Sculpture Garden & Gallery, Paruru Avenue, Northcote

Where did you study?
I was previously an engineer.
