Chris Van Doren

What inspires your art practice?
I feel you cannot put inspiration down to one thing or moment in time. For me it is about the creative process, working on ideas, concepts and bringing them to life. To keep the creativity process flowing I will work on several pieces at a time. As a sculptor I aspire to work on larger scale works, the small works are the platform for ideas.

What materials do you work in?
The mediums I work in are hard stone, wood, steel and copper.

Describe your artwork for NZ Sculpture OnShore 2021
The concept behind this sculpture was to create a contemporary styled Pacific gateway, exploring time, movement, space, light and shadows. The vision is of creating a gateway that represents double hulled Vaka and the ring of fire that connects Aotearoa to the Pacific. The sculpture will be lit up at night giving another dimension and a connection to the stars.

Where are the public most likely to see your artworks outside of NZSOS?
Lochmarra Lodge Marlborough Sounds; Corbans Arts Estate at the Pacific Arts Centre; Waitemata Golf Course and in Taiwan.
