Jeff Thomson & Myra Lloyd

Jeff Thomson & Myra Lloyd

What inspires your art practice?
Myra Lloyd: I am inspired by being able to experiment with a variety of materials, some of which I have previously used and others that are totally new to me to create forward looking designs inspired by an elegant past. I make hats that compliment today’s clothes but show a flavour of history.

Jeff Thomson: I like to use my imagination, manipulating common materials in ways that take them a long way from their original use. I am also interested in applying craft processes to industrial materials and seeing where it takes me.

What materials do you work in?
Myra Lloyd: Hand-crafted felt, custom-made fur and wool felt, straw, paper, leather, fur skins, various fabrics, even oil painting
on canvas.

Jeff Thomson: Steel and aluminium mesh, corrugated iron, wire, paper, hay and found objects.

Describe your artwork for NZ Sculpture OnShore 2021
A casual conversation between Jeff and Myra has inspired this quirky, whimsical, collaboration. Rustic farm animals made by Jeff are sporting fabulous hats designed and crafted by Myra. The hats, custom made for each individual animal, compliment and bring out the personality and magic of each animal.

Where are the public most likely to see your artworks outside of NZSOS?
Myra Lloyd: The Shelter, 78 Mackelvie St, Ponsonby; Helensville Art Trail, Every 3rd Sunday of the month; Marmalade Hats, 8 Karaka St, Helensville.

Jeff Thomson: Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington; Bowen Galleries, Wellington; Gibbs Farm, Kaipara Coast, Makarau; Brick Bay Sculpture Park, Brick Bay.
